OPR Audits of Continuing Education Units in Relicensing Applications

Several NASW-VT members have reported this year that their CEUs have been audited in connection with a relicensing application. This means they were asked to produce the documentation behind their claims.

Social workers who are licensed or working toward licenses should know that OPR does audits from time to time to assure the integrity of the licensing program.  Here are some tips to put you in a position to live “worry-free” and respond to an audited request quickly:

·         Keep the requirements in mind:

20 CEUs

1.5 CEUs must be in ethics and the certificate must state this.

5 of the 20 CEUs may be earned in informal settings (self-study, on-line courses, etc.)

·         Maintain a single paper file of all CEU certificates you earn during the two year licensing period. 2.

·         Divide the CEU certificates into either “formal” (face to face experiences) or informal (self-study or on-line courses).

·         Back this file up in one of two ways:

a.       Make a paper copy of each certificate and keep the file of copies in a separate location form the original file.

b.      Scan and create a .pdf file for each certificate and store these files on your professional computer.

If you receive a notice to present your CEU credentials and you do not have the above records for any reason, NASW-VT can offer some help for those educational events that NASW-VT approved for CEUs.

The following fees apply:

Complete search of the relicensing period (two years) and certificates of completion found

Members:  $30

Non-Members: $50

Targeted search of one known event with certificates of completion found (you must provide date and title or other identifying details)

Members:  $15

Non-Members: $30

NASW-VT also offers individual CEU approvals for professional development experiences that do not offer them to social worker participants. These must meet all the standards that prior approvals meet. The cost to members is $15, non-members $25.
